Assalam-u-Alaikum everyone, hope you guys are doing well.

Today I'm going to share a very delicious recipe with you. i.e Daal chawal. A very delicious & healthy meal recipe. This is a very forgiving dish when it comes to experimenting. you can try one lentil or 3 lentils (or even beans).

The spices are also super flexible. This particular recipe (my version) uses simple ingredients and spices for an extraordinary taste.

Ingredients:

Daal :

  1. Yellow chickpea lentil(Chana Daal): 1/4cup
  2. Yellow lentil (Moong daal):1/4cup
  3. Red lentil(Masoor daal):1/4cup
  4. Water: 1 liter
  5. Salt: according to taste
  6. Oil: 1 tsp
  7. Red chili powder:1tsp
  8. Turmeric powder: half tsp
  9. Baking soda :1 pinch
  10. Chicken cube :1
  11. Cumin seeds powder roasted& crushed: half tsp
  12. Crushed green chillies:1 tsp
  13. Green chilies & fresh coriander chopped half cup
  14. Garlic: 3 to 4
  15. Ginger: 1 small slice
  16. Onion chopped:1small
  17. Tomatoes  chopped: 1 small 
  18. Garam masala powder: half tsp

Tarka :

  1. Cooking oil: half cup
  2. Onion slice:1small
  3. Cumin seeds: 1 tsp
  4. Red button chilies :3 to 4
  5. Curry leaves:  10

Recipe:

  • In a pot add water, salt, chicken cube, red chilies powder, turmeric powder, green chilies, cumin seeds, ginger, garlic, cooking oil, and bring it to a boil.
  • Then add yellow chickpea lentil, yellow lentil, red lentil, onion, tomato, and baking soda mix well and bring it to boil.
  • Cover partially and cook for 40 to 50 minutes or until lentils are tender.
  • Mash well with the help of a wooden masher.
  • Add fresh coriander, green chilies, gram masala & mix well.
  •  Set aside.

Tarka

  • In a pan heat oil.
  • Add onion & fry till golden.
  • Add garlic & mix well.
  • Add cumin seeds, button chilies, mix well & saute for 1 to 2 minutes. 
  • Add curry leaves & mix well.
  • Add Tarka to the daal and mix well on low flame for 3 to 6 minutes.
  • Delicious daal is ready

Presentation:

  • Take daal in a bowl, and add fresh coriander, green chilies,& lemon.

  • Serve with naan (bread). With white rice or jeera rice.

What is Daal Chawal?

Daal chawal is a traditional meal from the Indian subcontinent, popular in many areas of Pakistan,  India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. It consists of steamed rice and a cooked lentil or other pulses stew called dal. It is a staple food in these countries. Bhat or Chawal means "boiled rice" in several Indo-Aryan languages.
