Assalam-u-Alaikum everyone, hope you guys are doing well.
Today I'm going to share a very delicious recipe with you. i.e Daal chawal. A very delicious & healthy meal recipe. This is a very forgiving dish when it comes to experimenting. you can try one lentil or 3 lentils (or even beans).
The spices are also super flexible. This particular recipe (my version) uses simple ingredients and spices for an extraordinary taste.
Ingredients:
Daal :
- Yellow chickpea lentil(Chana Daal): 1/4cup
- Yellow lentil (Moong daal):1/4cup
- Red lentil(Masoor daal):1/4cup
- Water: 1 liter
- Salt: according to taste
- Oil: 1 tsp
- Red chili powder:1tsp
- Turmeric powder: half tsp
- Baking soda :1 pinch
- Chicken cube :1
- Cumin seeds powder roasted& crushed: half tsp
- Crushed green chillies:1 tsp
- Green chilies & fresh coriander chopped half cup
- Garlic: 3 to 4
- Ginger: 1 small slice
- Onion chopped:1small
- Tomatoes chopped: 1 small
- Garam masala powder: half tsp
Tarka :
- Cooking oil: half cup
- Onion slice:1small
- Cumin seeds: 1 tsp
- Red button chilies :3 to 4
- Curry leaves: 10
Recipe:
- In a pot add water, salt, chicken cube, red chilies powder, turmeric powder, green chilies, cumin seeds, ginger, garlic, cooking oil, and bring it to a boil.
- Then add yellow chickpea lentil, yellow lentil, red lentil, onion, tomato, and baking soda mix well and bring it to boil.
- Cover partially and cook for 40 to 50 minutes or until lentils are tender.
- Mash well with the help of a wooden masher.
- Add fresh coriander, green chilies, gram masala & mix well.
- Set aside.
Tarka
- In a pan heat oil.
- Add onion & fry till golden.
- Add garlic & mix well.
- Add cumin seeds, button chilies, mix well & saute for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Add curry leaves & mix well.
- Add Tarka to the daal and mix well on low flame for 3 to 6 minutes.
- Delicious daal is ready
Presentation:
- Take daal in a bowl, and add fresh coriander, green chilies,& lemon.
Serve:
- Serve with naan (bread). With white rice or jeera rice.

What is Daal Chawal?
Daal chawal is a traditional meal from the Indian subcontinent, popular in many areas of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. It consists of steamed rice and a cooked lentil or other pulses stew called dal. It is a staple food in these countries. Bhat or Chawal means "boiled rice" in several Indo-Aryan languages.
