Haleem is a famous dish in Pakistan. Also eaten in the Indian and Persian subcontinents. It is made of grains, pulses, rice, and meat. It has a thick consistency because every ingredient of it is mashed. It has a  blast of flavors. 

Haleem is a main course dish but people do eat it for breakfast. It is famous in almost every city in India and Pakistan, among young's, adults, and aged people.

Cooking haleem for the first time is a challenge as it has a lengthy process. But let me make it easier for you guys، just a few steps and haleem is ready. I'll share authentic, simple, and tasty recipes with you.

Just cook it and enjoy.

So without wasting time let's get started.

Time required: 1 hour for cooking, 2 hours for boiling ingredients.

Servings: 5 to 6 person 

Ingredients:

  1. Wheat: 1cup
  2. Barley: 1 cup 
  3. Split Bengal gram (daal channa): 3/4 cup 
  4. White lentil: 1/2 cup 
  5. Red lentil: 1/2 cup
  6. Yellow lentil: 1/2 cup 
  7. Rice: 1/4 cup
  8. Water: as required
  9. Boneless chicken: half kg 
  10. Oil: 1 cup
  11. Onions: 2 medium size 
  12. Black peppercorns: 10 to 12 
  13. Bay leaves: 2 to 3
  14. Cinnamon: 2 to 3
  15. Ginger garlic paste: 1 and  1/2 tsp
  16. Green chilies paste: 1 and 1/2tsp
  17. Red pepper powder: 1 and 1/2 tsp
  18. Coriander powder: half tsp 
  19. Turmeric powder: half tsp 
  20. Salt: according to taste
  21. Gram masala powder: 1 tsp
  22. Cardamom powder: half tsp
  23. Curd or yogurt whisked:  1 cup 
  24. For tadka: optional 
  25. Oil: 4 tsp 
  26. Onion: 1  small sliced 
  27. Garam Masala: half tsp
  28. Fresh coriander, green chilies, lemon, and fried onion for garnishing.

Recipe:

  • Soak grains, pulses, and rice (separately) overnight.
  •  In a pot add water, overnight soaked grains,  pulses, and rice. Bring it to a boil.
  • Remove scum. 
  • Cover and cook for  2 to 3 hours on low flame until tenders.
  • Now mash them with a wooden masher and set them aside.
  • In a pot boil chicken for 10 minutes. Add half a tsp salt to it.
  • In a separate pot add oil, sliced onions, bay leaves, peppercorns, and cinnamon.
  • Cook till the onion gets golden and then add boiled chicken.
  • Add ginger garlic paste, and green chilies paste and mix well.
  • Add all spices like red pepper powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, and cardamom powder,  and mix well.
  •  Add whisked yogurt and mix. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes. 
  • Add 3 to 4 cups of water and mix. Cover and cook for About 30 minutes on low flame until chicken tenders. 
  • Remove cinnamon and bay leaves. Discard them. 
  •  Turn off the flame. Mash meat with a masher for 5 to 8 minutes. 
  • Again turn the flame on. Now add mashed pulses mixture to the gravy and mix.
  • Mash the haleem mixture again with a masher for 10 minutes. 
  • Add salt and Mix again.
  • Tadka: optional. 
  • In a pan add oil.
  • Add onion and garam masala. Fry onion until golden color.
  • Add prepared tadka to the haleem mixture and cover.
  • Mix it and heavenly delicious Haleem is ready to eat.

Garnishing : 

  • Garnish with fried onion, fresh coriander and. Lemon slices.

Serve with :

  • Serve with roomali roti or naan.
